The Waterside

Environmental

An award winning masterplan – Best Urban Design.

(2018 World Architecture News Awards)

The Waterside site used to be filled with heavy industry. Henning Larsen, award winning Danish architects are masters of taking brownfield sites and making them not just habitable, but desirable places to be. Henning Larsen’s masterplan for The Waterside was awarded Best Urban Design in the 2018 World Architecture News Awards and features a number of innovative environmental features:

Linear Park

This urban forest will be placed over a podium structure around the commercial part of the site. Creating a microclimate, this will be a pleasant place to enjoy a lunchtime stroll. It will be connected to a Green Boulevard that links the river to the back of the site.

Extending the outdoor period

The Waterside sits on the south side, or the sunny side of the Lagan River. As Belfast’s climate is temperate oceanic, comfortable outdoor conditions based on sun and wind factors, span 18% of the year. Henning Larsen’s architecture has been created to extend this comfortable outdoor period. By reducing the wind speed to 2 m/s, this period can be expanded to 45% of the year, which is 3x longer than the current conditions on site.
